Whole Home Use Water Heaters

What is a whole home use water heater?

On Demand Water Heaters, or Tankless water heaters, are designed to provide the hot water needs of the entire home. Different models are available depending on your family needs, from smaller, single point of use heaters for only one sink, to other models capable of supplying the hot water to several hot taps throughout your whole home.

When considering an on demand water heater for your whole home, it is essential that it be properly sized for the application. No one in your home will be happy if you purchase an inadequate model that may be cheaper in cost, but does not provide the amount of hot water your family needs. When considering the various models, it is essential that you determine how many hot taps you may be operating at any one time, as well as the flow rate for each of those taps.

More information about whole home water heaters;  On Demand Water Heaters are sized according to the Gallons Per Minute (GPM) that are required to be heated, as well as the temperature rise required from the cold water inlet temperature to the desired hot water outlet temperature.  When you know these two factors, you are well on your way to having the necessary information to correctly size the water heater.  It will be necessary to determine the GPM of your various taps, showers, etc. and the faucet manufacturer will be able to provide this information.  There are industry standard GPM figures for typical faucets/shower heads, etc. that can be used to estimate flow rates.

If the water heater is undersized, it may provide plenty of hot water for a single tap or two, but when another hot tap is turned on, the water heater cannot keep up and the water temperature will go down at all taps.  No hot tap in the home will have sufficient hot water when the demand is too much for the water heater, so it is very important to do your homework before selecting the size of water heater.

These whole home water heaters require a large amount of energy when operating to heat up the water so quickly.  If the unit operates on natural gas or propane, it may be necessary to increase the gas piping size over what was necessary if you had a storage tank type gas water heater.  If you are considering an electric whole home water heater, you will likely need to provide 220V power to the unit.

The links provided on this site will provide you with more specific information on the various type of on demand water heaters and the details necessary to ensure that it is sized correctly.
